Professional installation of a smart 7.4kW Ohme ePod electric vehicle charging point with integrated load management technology in Cornwall.
The growing shift towards electric vehicles brings with it the need for reliable home charging solutions. Working with a homeowner in Cornwall, we completed a comprehensive installation of an Ohme ePod electric vehicle charging system, providing a sophisticated 7.4kW charging solution.
The project began with a detailed assessment of the property’s electrical infrastructure to determine the optimal installation approach. We installed the untethered Ohme ePod charging point on the exterior wall, providing flexibility for the homeowner to use their preferred charging cable with their electric vehicle.
The installation required significant technical expertise to integrate the charging system with the property’s electrical setup. We fitted a dedicated 40-amp circuit breaker in the existing consumer unit and upgraded the RCD protection from Type AC to Type A, meeting current electrical regulations and safety standards. This modification provides enhanced protection specifically designed for electric vehicle charging equipment.
A crucial aspect of the installation involved implementing an intelligent load monitoring system. This sophisticated technology continuously monitors the property’s electrical consumption, automatically adjusting the charging rate to prevent system overload. This intelligent feature provides peace of mind, safeguarding the property’s electrical infrastructure while maximising charging efficiency.
We took particular care with the cable routing, creating a professional finish by concealing the supply cable within the wall void beneath the consumer unit. This attention to detail required precise channelling work in the plasterboard, though the final decorative finishing was left to the client’s preference.
The installation included an inline surge protection device (SPD), replacing an unused Economy 7 consumer unit. This addition provides comprehensive protection for both the charging equipment and the vehicle, guarding against potentially damaging power surges.
Following the installation, we conducted thorough electrical testing, producing a detailed Electrical Installation Certificate and submitting the necessary Building Control notifications. This documentation ensures compliance with current regulations and provides a record of the installation’s safety and quality.
The untethered design of the Ohme ePod offers remarkable versatility, allowing the homeowner to use different charging cables as needed. This flexibility, combined with the smart load management system, creates a future-proof charging solution that adapts to changing vehicle requirements and household energy demands.
