EV Charger Replacement in Camborne – Dual Zappi 7.4kW Installation

Two faulty EV charge points at a property in Camborne were removed and replaced with a pair of MyEnergi Zappi 7.4kW tethered units, complete with a Harvi load management device - keeping the installation compliant, reliable, and ready for day-to-day use.

EV charging that simply stops working is more than an inconvenience – it disrupts routines and, depending on the property, can leave multiple vehicles without a reliable overnight charge. That was the situation at this Camborne property, where two existing charge points had developed faults and were no longer fit for purpose. The decision was made to remove them entirely and start fresh with a setup that would actually hold up.

The original units were Project EV chargers. Both were disconnected and taken out, and the existing supply cabling running to each position was assessed and retained, which kept the project scope manageable and avoided unnecessary groundwork or rewiring. Reusing the existing infrastructure where it’s sound is almost always the right call – it reduces disruption and cost without cutting any corners on the end result.

In their place, two MyEnergi Zappi 7.4kW tethered EV chargers were installed. The Zappi is a well-regarded unit in the EV charging market – it operates at 7.4kW on a single-phase supply, which is a meaningful step up from a standard three-pin socket and will typically deliver a full charge overnight for most electric vehicles. The tethered configuration means the charging cable is permanently fixed to the unit. That removes the need to carry a separate cable every time you charge and, just as practically, eliminates the risk of cable theft – something that’s become a consideration worth taking seriously with more EVs on the road.

One of the other elements that needed attention was the circuit protection feeding each charger. The existing 32A RCBO circuit breakers were uprated to 40A. This wasn’t just a routine swap – running a 7.4kW charger on a 32A breaker can cause nuisance tripping under sustained load, which shortens the lifespan of the breaker and becomes a real frustration over time. Getting the circuit protection properly matched to the load is part of doing the job correctly, not an afterthought.

Alongside the two Zappi units, a MyEnergi Harvi was installed. The Harvi is a wireless energy monitoring device that works in conjunction with the Zappi chargers to give the system load awareness. In practical terms, it monitors the incoming electrical supply and communicates with the chargers so they can adjust their output if the property’s overall demand is getting close to the supply limit. This is the kind of load management that current wiring regulations now require for EV installations in many circumstances – it’s there to prevent a scenario where two chargers running simultaneously push the property’s electrical supply into overload. The Harvi does this without needing additional cables between it and the charge points, which makes for a cleaner installation overall.

Once everything was installed and wired, full electrical testing of the circuits was carried out. This produced the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) that the customer needed, and the work was also notified to Building Control as required. Testing isn’t a formality – it confirms the circuits are safe and performing within specification, and the documentation gives the property owner something tangible that stands up if they ever need to demonstrate the installation was done properly, whether for insurance purposes or a future property sale.

The system was then commissioned and fully paired. Both Zappi units were connected up and tested to confirm correct operation before leaving site. The Harvi was confirmed as communicating with the chargers as it should. Getting the commissioning done properly at the point of installation means the customer can start using the system straight away with confidence, rather than having to go back and forth troubleshooting pairing issues.

For anyone in Camborne or the wider Cornwall area dealing with a faulty EV charger – or looking to upgrade an older unit that no longer meets current standards – this kind of replacement job is something we handle regularly. The combination of Zappi chargers and a Harvi load management device is a solid, regulation-compliant setup that works well for properties with multiple charge points sharing a single supply.
