We were recently called out to a property in Newquay to upgrade the front exterior lighting. The main focus was installing a pair of traditional lantern style wall lights on either side of the front door, controlled by a discreetly positioned PIR motion sensor on the soffit. To give the client full control, we also upgraded the hallway switch to allow for a manual override.
We recently took on a project at a home in Newquay that involved improving the exterior lighting setup. The client wanted to make the front of their property more welcoming in the evenings and add a layer of convenience when coming home in the dark. The main task was installing two new wall lights on either side of the front entrance, along with a motion sensor to control them automatically.
The client had already sourced the light fittings they wanted to use for this project. They chose some really nice, traditional black lantern style lights that fit perfectly with the classic look of the house, contrasting nicely against the lightly textured exterior walls. Our job was to get them wired up securely and working exactly how the client envisioned. We started by planning the cable routes, which is always a vital step before drilling any holes. For these exterior lights, we needed to get power to either side of the doorway and also connect them to a new passive infrared motion sensor.
We decided the neatest way to handle the cabling for the sensor was to route it up and through the loft space. Taking the time to do this allowed us to keep the wires completely out of sight and bring them down exactly where they were needed on the outside. We mounted the black PIR sensor high up on the white soffit, tucked away near the corner above the entrance. Positioning it here gives it an excellent field of view over the approach to the front door without it becoming an eyesore. It sits unobtrusively under the eaves, protected from the worst of the weather while still detecting anyone walking up the path.
The lantern lights themselves were mounted directly onto the exterior wall, flanking the doorway and the bay window. The textured surface of the wall meant we had to be quite careful with our fixings to ensure the lights sat completely flush, secure, and level. We made sure everything was sealed up tight against the elements. With the lights and the sensor securely in place outside, our attention turned to setting up the control system indoors.
The existing setup in the entrance hallway was a standard single gang switch. We swapped this out for a new two gang switch to give the client more flexibility. This upgrade gave them a dedicated switch to override the PIR sensor entirely. This is a really handy feature if they ever want to keep the outside lights on continuously for guests, or turn them off completely, rather than just relying on the motion detection. It gives you the best of both worlds with automated security lighting and manual control.
Taking time to plan the cable routes made a big difference to the final finish. Running the cabling through the loft space kept the exterior of the property looking neat and tidy. We always try to find the most discreet way to install new wiring, and the loft route was the best option for this particular home. The client was happy with the final result, and the new lighting setup provides both practicality and a welcoming feel to the front of their property.
The combination of the motion sensor and the manual override switch gives the client complete control over their new lighting. They can rely on the sensor for everyday convenience, knowing the lights will turn on automatically when they approach the door. And if they have guests over or want to leave the lights on for a longer period, they can easily do so using the indoor switch. This flexibility is a key benefit of a well designed exterior lighting system.
We often find that upgrading exterior lighting is a popular choice for homeowners looking to improve the look and functionality of their property. It’s a relatively straightforward project that can make a noticeable difference to the overall feel of a home. Whether you’re looking for added security, convenience, or simply want to create a more welcoming entrance, a thoughtfully planned lighting setup can achieve all of these goals.
For this project, the client’s choice of traditional lantern lights complemented the style of their home perfectly. The black finish of the lights and the sensor tied everything together nicely, creating a cohesive look. We always take the time to discuss the options with our clients to ensure the final result meets their expectations and complements their property’s style.
The installation process was straightforward, thanks to careful planning and the use of the loft space for cable routing. We made sure to leave the work area clean and tidy, ensuring the client was satisfied with the job. If you’re considering an exterior lighting upgrade for your home, it’s worth taking the time to think about the different options available, from motion sensors and smart controls to various styles of light fittings. We’re always happy to offer advice and help you find the best solution for your needs.
