We recently installed a tethered MyEnergi Zappi electric vehicle charging point at Towan Cottage holiday let in Newquay, adding value for guests with electric vehicles while supporting sustainable tourism.
The holiday accommodation market in Cornwall is evolving rapidly as more visitors arrive in electric vehicles. These travellers increasingly seek out properties that offer convenient charging facilities during their stay. Recognising this shift, the owners of Towan Cottage holiday let in Newquay contacted us to install an EV charging solution that would meet the needs of their guests while maintaining the property’s electrical integrity.
The installation involved mounting a 7.4kW tethered MyEnergi Zappi EV charge point on the front exterior wall of the holiday cottage, positioned neatly below the property’s slate name sign. This location provides excellent visibility and accessibility for guests arriving with electric vehicles. We specifically recommended a tethered charging unit for the holiday let context, as it eliminates the need for guests to bring their own charging cables – an item that holiday makers might forget or prefer not to transport during their travels. The permanently attached cable also reduces the likelihood of theft or damage, a practical consideration for a property with changing occupants.
For holiday lets, electrical safety is particularly important due to the variety of users who might interact with the charging equipment. Our installation incorporated a 40A Lewden RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) into the existing consumer unit, creating a comprehensive safety system that protects both the charging infrastructure and the wider property electrical system. This protective device disconnects the circuit in the event of electrical faults or overloads, providing peace of mind for both property owners and their guests.
A significant challenge when installing EV chargers in holiday accommodation is that guests may be unfamiliar with the property’s electrical capacity and inadvertently cause system overloads. To prevent this, we integrated a load monitoring device within the existing electrical cabinet. This intelligent system continuously monitors the overall electricity consumption of the cottage and automatically modulates the charging power to prevent circuit overloads. When guests use multiple appliances simultaneously—perhaps running the oven, shower, and heating during their stay—the system automatically reduces the EV charging rate temporarily, then increases it again when capacity becomes available. This dynamic management prevents tripped breakers and avoids the more costly alternative of upgrading the property’s electrical supply.
Following the physical installation, we performed comprehensive electrical testing to verify the system’s safety and performance, producing the required Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). This documentation is particularly valuable for holiday let owners as it demonstrates compliance with safety regulations and can be included in the property’s safety documentation for insurance purposes. We also submitted the Building Control Notification of Electrical Works as required by regulations.
The MyEnergi Zappi charger offers several features that make it ideal for holiday let applications. Its clear digital display with simple controls allows guests to easily monitor charging status without requiring technical knowledge. The unit’s robust weather-resistant design withstands Cornwall’s coastal climate, while its secure mounting and tamper-resistant features provide durability in a setting where multiple different users will interact with it throughout the year.
From a business perspective, installing an EV charger significantly enhances the appeal of Towan Cottage to the growing market of environmentally conscious travellers. The owners can now list EV charging as an amenity in their property listings, potentially improving booking rates and allowing for premium pricing. As EV charger installers in Newquay, we’ve seen firsthand how holiday properties with charging facilities often gain a competitive edge in Cornwall’s busy tourism market.
This installation exemplifies how holiday let owners across Cornwall can adapt to changing visitor expectations while contributing to the region’s sustainability goals. By providing convenient charging facilities, Towan Cottage now offers a practical solution for the increasing number of visitors exploring Cornwall’s beautiful coastline in electric vehicles.
