A comprehensive electrical renovation project in St Columb transforming a living room with improved socket positioning, new lighting installations and fireplace feature lighting.
When homeowners decide to renovate their living spaces, the electrical infrastructure often requires updating to complement the new design. We recently undertook a detailed electrical renovation in a St Columb property, focusing primarily on the living room area to improve both functionality and aesthetics.
The living room required significant electrical adjustments to accommodate modern technology needs while enhancing the visual appeal of the space. The project centred around strategic socket relocation, installation of new lighting features, and particular attention to the fireplace area which serves as the room’s focal point.
Our team began by addressing several socket positioning issues. The WiFi router socket needed relocation to provide better connectivity while being less visually intrusive. We carefully moved it leftward, closer to the corner of the wall, and recessed it for a cleaner finish. Similarly, another socket adjacent to the archway was relocated to the perpendicular wall under the left bay window, again recessed into the wall for a streamlined appearance.
The fireplace area presented unique challenges and opportunities. A socket adjacent to the fireplace needed recessing into the wall to maintain the clean lines of the renovated space. This particular modification was crucial for maintaining the visual integrity of the fireplace as a centrepiece while preserving necessary functionality.
Television viewing areas in modern living rooms demand careful electrical planning. We raised the TV socket outlet to position it directly behind the television, eliminating unsightly cable runs. We also added an additional TV socket to accommodate the increasing number of media devices common in today’s homes. Both socket outlets were recessed into the wall, creating a professional finish that complements rather than detracts from the viewing experience.
To maintain consistency throughout the space, we replaced all remaining socket fronts in the living room, giving the entire area a cohesive, updated appearance while improving safety with newer components.
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating ambiance, and this project involved significant lighting improvements. We installed two pendant lights in the centre of the living room to replace the existing single light fixture. This change dramatically improved the overall illumination of the space while creating a more balanced visual effect. The renovation included a thoughtful splitting of the lighting circuit, allowing the pendant on the TV side of the room to be controlled from a switch adjacent to the main entrance. This provides practical convenience for everyday use.
The fireplace area received special attention with the installation of two new wall lights positioned on either side. These lights were designed to accentuate this natural focal point of the room, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The client supplied their chosen light fittings, which we installed and connected to the existing wall switch for straightforward operation. This combination of practical functionality and aesthetic enhancement typifies our approach to residential electrical work.
In the hallway, we removed an outdated telephone point, carefully extracting the wiring without causing unnecessary damage to the wall. This small but important detail contributes to the overall modernisation of the property.
Throughout the project, we maintained careful consideration of the property’s structure. The living room ceiling contained asbestos, requiring special handling techniques. We either clipped cables to existing battens or used appropriate adhesive cable tie bases to avoid disturbing the hazardous material.
The renovation also included provisions for electric vehicle charging with the installation of a white tethered Zappi unit, supported by a 40a Lewden RCBO and 10m of specialised EV cable, secured with fire-rated cable clips. This forward-thinking addition brings the property firmly into the modern age of sustainable transport options.
Working closely with the renovation schedule, we coordinated our electrical modifications to integrate seamlessly with other trades working on the property. The recessing of sockets, for instance, required careful planning to minimise disruption to decorative finishes.
This St Columb living room electrical renovation demonstrates how thoughtful electrical design can significantly contribute to both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of a living space. From practically positioned sockets to atmospheric lighting around the fireplace, each element was carefully considered to create a cohesive, modern living environment that meets the electrical demands of contemporary living while enhancing the visual appeal of the renovated space.
