Professional Zappi EV Charger Installation in Falmouth

We recently completed a comprehensive MyEnergi Zappi EV charger installation for a client in Falmouth, featuring a 90-metre cable run and smart load management system.

Our team carried out a specialised EV charging installation at a residential property in Falmouth, where the client required a dedicated charging solution for their electric vehicle. This installation presented several unique challenges due to the significant distance between the property’s central metering cupboard and the designated parking area.

The project centred on installing a 7.4kW tethered MyEnergi Zappi EV charge point, strategically positioned in the client’s parking bay. We carefully mounted the unit behind the existing crash barrier to provide both protection and convenient access for the vehicle owner. The Zappi charger was selected for its reliability and smart features that allow for integration with renewable energy systems and intelligent charging capabilities.

A critical aspect of this installation involved the extensive cable routing required to connect the charger to the main electrical supply. We installed approximately 90 metres of Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable, which provided the necessary protection and durability for both underground and external wall-mounted sections. The cable route was carefully planned to minimise visual impact, being neatly clipped to the exterior walls before transitioning through the gardens to reach the communal parking area.

Where the cable crossed grassed areas, we dug trenches to a depth of 450mm, exceeding the minimum safety requirements for underground electrical cabling. This depth ensures protection from accidental damage during routine garden maintenance while providing adequate insulation from environmental factors.

Safety and compliance were paramount throughout this installation. We installed a dedicated consumer unit with an integrated 40A circuit breaker and Surge Protection Device (SPD) within the central metering cupboard. This configuration provides comprehensive protection against electrical faults and power surges, safeguarding both the charging equipment and the connected vehicle.

The communal nature of the building required additional considerations. We used fire-rated cable fixings throughout the installation, ensuring full compliance with the stringent electrical regulations applicable to communal and commercial buildings. These specialised fixings maintain their integrity during fire conditions, preventing the spread of fire along cable routes.

To protect the property’s electrical infrastructure from potential overloading, we installed a sophisticated load monitoring device. This intelligent system continuously monitors the total electrical demand of the property and automatically adjusts the EV charging rate when necessary. This prevents circuit overloads and eliminates the risk of tripping the main supply, allowing for efficient charging without compromising the property’s existing electrical systems.

The final stage of our installation involved comprehensive electrical testing and certification. We conducted thorough testing of the newly installed circuit to verify its safety and compliance with current regulations. This testing formed the basis of the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) provided to the client and was essential for the submission of the Building Control Notification of Electrical Works.

To address potential connectivity issues given the distance between the property and the charger location, we supplied and commissioned a TP Link WiFi range extender. This ensures reliable communication between the Zappi charger and the client’s home network, allowing them to fully utilise the smart features of their charging system through the MyEnergi app.

This Falmouth installation demonstrates our capability to deliver complex EV charging solutions that overcome site-specific challenges while maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance. By providing a complete end-to-end service from initial assessment through to certification and connectivity optimisation, we’ve delivered a charging system that perfectly meets our client’s needs while future-proofing their property for the ongoing transition to electric vehicles.
