Alan’s Project – LED Batten Light Replacement in Garage

We recently completed another upgrade for Alan as part of our Positive Connections initiative, installing a modern LED batten light to improve visibility and energy efficiency in his workspace.

It was wonderful to hear from Alan again when he contacted us through our Positive Connections programme about his garage lighting troubles. After helping him with a socket repair issue back in July 2024, where loose connections had been causing his circuit breaker to trip, we were delighted he thought of us when his garage light started playing up.

This time, Alan’s concern was his old 4ft fluorescent batten light that had been flickering intermittently for several weeks before finally giving up completely. The failed lighting left him struggling to work safely on his various projects in what had become a rather gloomy workspace. Having experienced our community service first-hand with his previous electrical issue, Alan knew exactly who to call.

When we arrived at Alan’s property, we were greeted by the same friendly face we’d met months earlier. His garage serves as both storage space and workshop, filled with the tools and equipment of someone who clearly enjoys keeping busy with practical projects. The failed fluorescent fitting was mounted on the ceiling, and whilst the existing wiring remained in good condition from our previous visit, the old ballast and starter had finally reached the end of their working life.

Our approach began with safely isolating the electrical supply, following the same careful procedures we’d used during Alan’s socket repair. We methodically removed the old fluorescent batten, taking extra care not to damage the ceiling or surrounding area. The existing mounting points were still solid and properly secured, which meant we could utilise the same fixing positions for the new LED unit without any additional structural work.

The replacement 4ft LED batten light represents a significant upgrade from Alan’s old fluorescent system. LED technology delivers instant, bright illumination without the annoying flicker or lengthy warm-up period that had been plaguing his previous setup. The light output is notably more consistent and substantially brighter, transforming the working conditions throughout the entire garage space. Perhaps most importantly for Alan, LED units consume far less electricity than traditional fluorescent alternatives, meaning his energy bills will benefit from this upgrade for years to come.

Installing the new LED batten required connecting the unit directly to the mains supply, completely eliminating the problematic ballasts and starters that frequently cause issues in fluorescent systems. This simpler electrical design means fewer components that can potentially fail, resulting in a much more reliable lighting solution that should provide decades of dependable service.

Once we’d completed and thoroughly tested all electrical connections, we securely mounted the new fitting to the ceiling and conducted comprehensive safety checks. The installation underwent rigorous testing to ensure proper operation and full compliance with current electrical safety standards. Alan was absolutely thrilled with the immediate transformation, remarking on how everything in his workshop area now appeared crystal clear and well-defined.

The improvement was genuinely striking. Where Alan had previously been working under poor, unreliable lighting that cast uneven shadows and made detailed work challenging, he now enjoys bright, consistent illumination that reaches every corner of his garage. This enhancement doesn’t just make his projects more enjoyable and precise, but significantly improves safety when he’s handling tools and working on various equipment.

Contemporary LED batten lights like the one we installed for Alan are engineered for exceptional longevity, typically lasting between 25,000 and 50,000 hours of operation. This means Alan won’t need to worry about frequent bulb replacements or the frustration of sudden lighting failures for many years ahead. The robust construction of modern LED units also makes them particularly well-suited to garage environments, where temperature fluctuations and occasional impacts from moving equipment are simply part of daily life.

This project perfectly illustrates the ongoing relationships that our Positive Connections initiative helps foster within the community. Alan’s initial contact about his socket problems introduced him to our service, and when another electrical issue arose, he felt comfortable reaching out again. These continuing connections demonstrate how community support programmes can provide ongoing peace of mind for residents who might otherwise struggle with electrical maintenance costs.

The garage lighting replacement took just a few hours to complete from start to finish, but the positive impact on Alan’s daily routine and hobbies will extend far into the future. He expressed genuine appreciation for the service and mentioned how much more he was looking forward to his weekend projects now that he had proper illumination. These personal testimonials remind our team why initiatives like Positive Connections remain so vital for community wellbeing.

Alan’s lighting project joins his earlier socket repair as part of our growing portfolio of Positive Connections work, each job helping community members maintain safe, functional living spaces without the financial pressure that electrical repairs can sometimes create.
