Lucie’s Project – Garden Spa

Through the Positive Connections initiative, we installed a dedicated 32A outdoor electrical supply to help a foster family provide therapeutic spa access for their disabled daughter.

When we received the enquiry about installing a 32A plug in a garden for a lazy spa, we knew immediately this was exactly the sort of project that Positive Connections exists to support. Lucie explained that her disabled daughter would benefit enormously from having regular access to a therapeutic spa.

Foster families already face so many challenges, and this simple addition to their garden could make such a difference to her daughter’s quality of life. Without proper electrical supply, the spa would remain unusable, which is exactly the sort of barrier that Positive Connections exists to remove.

Our team visited the property to assess what would be needed. The house had an 18th Edition consumer unit with capacity for the additional circuit, and we could see exactly where the spa would be positioned in the garden. The installation would require running a dedicated 32A circuit from the house to an outdoor socket, complete with proper isolation and weatherproofing.

We started by installing a new B32 MCB in the consumer unit, then carefully routed 6mm armoured cable from the house to the garden location. The cable ran internally through 25mm trunking before transitioning to the outside wall, where we neatly clipped it using appropriate fixings. We fitted a 32A rotary isolator to give the family complete control over the power supply, along with a weatherproof double socket at the rear corner of the property.

The installation required careful attention to detail, particularly with the cable termination using appropriate gland packs to ensure weatherproof connections. We used proper cable cleats at regular intervals to ensure the SWA remained securely fixed throughout its route.

Throughout the installation, we took time to explain how everything worked. The rotary isolator gives the family an easy way to switch off the power when the spa isn’t being used, and we showed them the simple safety procedures to ensure they felt completely confident about using the new system.

What struck us most was how this electrical installation would have such a profound impact on the family’s daily life. The spa would provide therapeutic benefits for her daughter, whilst also giving the whole family a chance to enjoy their garden space together.

The technical side was important, of course. We carried out all the necessary testing to ensure the installation was completely safe and compliant with current regulations. But beyond the electrical work, this project represented something much more meaningful – using our skills to remove barriers and create opportunities for vulnerable families in our local area.

Foster carers provide such an essential service to children who need extra support. They deserve our community’s backing, and we’re proud that Positive Connections can offer practical help when it’s needed most. This installation will provide years of reliable service, enabling this family to access the therapeutic benefits they need.

The completed installation gives the family everything they need to safely operate their garden spa. It’s these practical solutions that make our work so rewarding and remind us why community support matters so much.
