Through our Positive Connections initiative, we helped restore essential electrical services for a vulnerable resident who had been struggling with basic home safety and functionality.
Sometimes the most meaningful electrical work isn’t about grand installations or complex rewiring projects. It’s about restoring dignity and safety to someone’s daily life through simple but essential repairs. That’s exactly what happened when we received a call from a resident in Goonhavern who desperately needed help with basic electrical issues that were affecting her quality of life.
The customer had been bedridden since 2007, which already presented significant challenges for maintaining her home. Her son, who serves as her primary carer, faces his own difficulties with autism and ADHD, making it particularly challenging to manage all aspects of home maintenance whilst providing the care his mother requires. When they moved into their current bungalow just after lockdown, the isolation felt overwhelming. Not being able to meet neighbours during those difficult times, combined with ongoing electrical problems, meant their new home didn’t feel like the safe haven it should have been.
What struck us most was her comment that she hadn’t expected to find companies offering free electrical services these days. It’s a sad reflection of how rare genuine community support has become, but it’s precisely why our Positive Connections initiative exists. Too many vulnerable people struggle in silence, assuming help isn’t available or that they can’t afford essential repairs.
The primary issue was a faulty shower pull cord isolator that had left them without a functioning shower. For someone who’s bedridden and relies on assistance with personal care, having a working shower isn’t just about convenience – it’s fundamental to health, dignity, and basic quality of life. The broken isolator meant the shower couldn’t be safely operated, creating a significant challenge for both the resident and her carer.
Matt and John carefully assessed the bathroom electrical setup and replaced the faulty shower pull cord isolator with a new, reliable unit. The replacement involved ensuring the new isolator was properly rated for the shower’s electrical load and that all connections were secure and compliant with current regulations. Given the vulnerable nature of the resident, they took extra care to complete the work efficiently whilst maintaining the highest safety standards.
The exterior lighting presented another significant concern. Both the front and rear wall lights had failed, leaving the property in darkness during evening hours. For a vulnerable resident who relies on carers and visitors, proper exterior lighting isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s a crucial safety feature that helps prevent accidents and provides security. The failed lights also meant that anyone approaching the property, whether family, carers, or emergency services, couldn’t safely navigate the entrances.
Matt and John replaced both exterior wall lights with new, energy-efficient LED units that provide reliable illumination for years to come. The installation required careful attention to weatherproofing and ensuring the lights were positioned to provide optimal coverage of the entrance areas. They selected robust fittings that would withstand Cornwall’s coastal weather conditions whilst providing the bright, welcoming light the property needed.
What made this job particularly rewarding was learning about the positive changes happening in this resident’s life. After years of feeling isolated and struggling with basic home maintenance, she’s been making improvements over the past two years and beginning to feel like she’s getting some of her life back. The electrical repairs were just one small part of that journey, but knowing that a working shower and proper lighting contribute to someone’s renewed sense of hope and independence makes every moment of the work worthwhile.
The family’s gratitude was evident, but what resonated most was the relief in knowing that these essential systems were now working safely and reliably. For someone who depends on others for care, having confidence in their home’s basic electrical systems removes one significant worry from an already challenging situation.
This project exemplifies exactly why Positive Connections matters. It’s not about the complexity of the electrical work or the scale of the installation – it’s about recognising that everyone deserves a safe, functional home regardless of their circumstances. When vulnerable members of our community face barriers to accessing essential electrical services, whether due to financial constraints, mobility issues, or simply not knowing where to turn for help, we want to be there to bridge that gap.
The work Matt and John completed will make a real difference to daily life in this household. A working shower means maintaining dignity and health, whilst reliable exterior lighting provides safety and security. These aren’t luxuries – they’re basic necessities that everyone should have access to, and we’re proud to have played a small part in restoring them.
