This project involved installing several new double sockets in a home to accommodate modern appliances and gadgets. To avoid disruption to the existing walls, we used surface-mounted trunking to neatly conceal the new wiring, providing a practical and clean solution for getting power exactly where it was needed.
In many properties, especially those built a few decades ago, the number of plug sockets can feel quite limited for the demands of modern life. From charging phones and laptops to plugging in lamps or a vacuum cleaner, we often find ourselves searching for a free outlet or relying on cumbersome extension leads. This was precisely the situation a recent client wanted to resolve by adding more power points in a busy area of their home.
The request was for two additional double sockets to be installed on a wall near a doorway. The primary challenge in any project like this is how to run the new wiring from the existing circuit to the new socket locations. While chasing the cables into the wall is one option, it involves cutting into the plaster, which creates significant dust and disruption, and always requires re-plastering and redecorating afterwards. To avoid this, we opted for a much cleaner and more efficient method: surface-mounted trunking.
We began by identifying a suitable point on the existing ring main circuit to spur from. This provided the power source for the new outlets. From there, we installed a discreet, low-profile trunking system. The plastic conduit sits flush against the wall, and we ran it neatly up the corner, following the contours of the room to keep it as unobtrusive as possible. This method contains and protects the new wiring safely, complying with all electrical regulations.
Once the trunking was in place, we fitted the two new double sockets at a convenient height. The final installation provides four additional power outlets, instantly increasing the functionality of the space. The white trunking blends well with the light-coloured walls and door frame, creating a clean finish. Should the client decide to redecorate in the future, the trunking can be painted to match any new colour scheme, making it even less noticeable. This project is a great example of how electrical improvements can be carried out with minimal fuss, providing a practical upgrade that makes a real difference to everyday convenience.
