Consumer Unit Replacement & Socket Installation in Truro

Bringing a dated electrical system into the modern era with a comprehensive consumer unit replacement and bedroom power improvement project.

When our Truro client contacted us about upgrading their electrical system, we immediately recognised the importance of modernising both safety standards and functionality. The existing consumer unit had become outdated, presenting potential safety concerns while lacking the protection features found in contemporary electrical installations.

Upon our initial inspection, we conducted a thorough Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) to assess the overall state of the property’s electrical system. This comprehensive testing procedure allowed us to identify all potential issues and develop a tailored solution that would address both safety concerns and the client’s specific requirements for additional power outlets.

The heart of this project involved replacing the existing consumer unit with a fire-rated 14-way RCBO consumer unit featuring integrated Surge Protection Device (SPD) technology. This upgrade represents a significant improvement in electrical safety for several reasons. Modern RCBO-protected consumer units offer individualised circuit protection, meaning that if a fault occurs on one circuit, only that specific circuit will be isolated rather than affecting the entire property. This targeted protection minimises disruption during fault conditions while maintaining safety.

The inclusion of surge protection technology was particularly important given the increasing number of sensitive electronic devices in modern homes. Voltage fluctuations and power surges from the National Grid can damage expensive electronics such as computers, televisions, and smart home systems. The integrated SPD provides crucial protection against these events, potentially saving the homeowner from costly equipment replacements.

As part of the consumer unit upgrade, we installed new 25mm double-insulated meter tails. These larger capacity cables between the meter and consumer unit improve the overall electrical supply to the property, ensuring sufficient capacity for current and future electrical demands. All work was completed in strict accordance with the current 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, ensuring full compliance with the latest safety standards.

Beyond the consumer unit replacement, we addressed the client’s need for additional power outlets in the back bedroom. This part of the project involved installing a dedicated 20-amp socket circuit to supply five new double socket outlets. We paid careful attention to the routing of cables, utilising the first-floor cavity wherever possible to minimise visible wiring. Where surface mounting was necessary within the bedroom, we used neat white PVC trunking to contain the cables, providing a clean and professional finish.

The strategic placement of the new socket outlets was determined in consultation with the client during our on-site visit. This collaborative approach ensured that the final installation perfectly met their needs for device charging, computer usage, and other electrical requirements in this space. The new circuit provides ample power capacity for multiple devices to operate simultaneously without overloading.

Throughout this project, we maintained clear communication with the homeowner, explaining the benefits of each aspect of the installation and providing guidance on how to use their new electrical system safely. Upon completion, we conducted rigorous testing of both the new consumer unit and socket circuit to verify that everything functioned correctly and met the required safety standards.

This comprehensive electrical upgrade has provided our Truro client with a significantly safer and more functional electrical system. The modern consumer unit offers superior protection for both the property and its occupants, while the additional socket outlets have enhanced the usability of the back bedroom. The entire installation complies with current regulations and includes appropriate documentation for future reference.

For homeowners with older consumer units, particularly those without RCD protection or surge protection, similar upgrades can dramatically improve electrical safety. Additionally, strategically adding socket outlets in underserved areas of the home can
