Custom RGB LED Strip Lighting Installation Transforms RNAS Culdrose Senior Rates Mess

We recently completed a comprehensive LED strip lighting installation at the RNAS Culdrose Senior Rates Mess function room in Helston, transforming the venue’s atmosphere with customisable RGB lighting solutions. Working alongside our audiovisual partners Legacy AV, we delivered an integrated lighting system that offers incredible versatility for different events and functions.

The project involved installing colour-changing LED strip lighting throughout the venue, creating a dramatic visual impact that complements the function room’s entertainment spaces. The custom LED installation included elegant ceiling strips that form geometric patterns across the room, with additional warm white dimmable LED strips integrated along the TV wall and bar area.

One of the primary goals was to give the venue management complete control over their lighting environment. The RGBW LED ceiling strips can display virtually any colour combination, allowing the space to be customised for different events—from subtle blues for relaxed evenings to vibrant reds and purples for dance nights. The installation utilises DMX512 controllers, giving precise command over lighting effects, intensity and colour transitions.

For the bar area, we installed warm white dimmable LED strips that create an inviting glow, highlighting the wooden bar and creating a sophisticated ambience. This lighting can be adjusted from bright illumination for daytime service to a softer mood lighting for evening events.

The technical aspects of the installation required careful planning to ensure seamless integration with existing systems. We routed all new lighting circuits to connect with the venue’s existing bank of light switches located behind the stage area, making operation intuitive for staff. Additionally, we installed a permanent lighting supply to the bar area, future-proofing the system for any planned lighting additions.

Energy efficiency was another important consideration for this project. LED strip lighting consumes significantly less power than traditional lighting solutions while offering superior brightness and colour accuracy. The high-quality LED strips we selected provide excellent colour rendering and consistent light output, ensuring the venue looks its best regardless of the chosen lighting scheme.

Working alongside audiovisual specialists meant coordinating multiple aspects of the entertainment system upgrade. The lighting installation was designed to complement new projection equipment and audio systems, creating a cohesive entertainment environment. The DMX LED drivers we installed allow the lighting to respond to music or preprogrammed sequences, adding another dimension to the venue’s entertainment capabilities.

The ceiling installation presented particular challenges, as we needed to create clean, straight lines while navigating around existing fixtures such as air conditioning vents, speakers, and safety equipment. Our team used high-quality white LED profiles to house the strips, ensuring a professional finish with no visible wiring or uneven light diffusion.

The transformation of the Senior Rates Mess function room has been remarkable. What was once a standard function room has become a dynamic space that can adapt to any occasion. From sports screenings with team-coloured lighting to formal events with elegant white illumination, the versatility of the new LED system has significantly expanded the venue’s appeal.

Feedback from the mess management has been overwhelmingly positive. They’ve reported increased use of the function room and greater attendance at regular events. The ability to create distinct atmospheres has allowed them to diversify their offerings and enhance the experience for all users.
