We headed out to a property in Newquay to tackle a broad list of electrical updates spread across multiple rooms. The homeowner had a clear plan of what they wanted to achieve, from sorting out the kitchen power supply to improving the lighting in the loft and outdoor areas. It is always interesting taking on these multi-room jobs because you get to cover various aspects of domestic electrical work in a single visit. We started by mapping out the cable routes and identifying the existing circuits to make sure everything would integrate safely with the current consumer unit.

The kitchen was our first port of call for this electrical installation in Newquay. The client had sourced their own replacement recirculating extractor fan unit to sit above the hob. We took down the old unit, prepared the mounting area, and got the new Bosch fan securely fixed to the wall brackets. To get the power sorted for this, we had to alter the existing electrical setup. We removed an old fused outlet from the tiled wall and wired in a standard single gang socket to suit the plug on the new extractor fan. While we were working on the kitchen ring main, we moved over to the dining area to address a shortage of plug space. The client needed extra capacity for countertop appliances but faced a structural issue. Recessing a new metal back-box into the wall wasn’t an option due to a severe lack of wall thickness in that specific spot. Chasing it out would have caused unnecessary damage. We went with a surface-mounted socket outlet instead, running the power supply directly from an adjacent kitchen socket. This gave them the extra plug space they desperately needed for daily use without compromising the shallow wall structure.

Moving through the property, we tackled a couple of straightforward lighting swaps. In the living room, we fitted a new pendant light that the client had picked up themselves. After checking the fitting was electrically sound and in a serviceable condition, we stripped back the flex and wired it securely into the existing ceiling rose setup. Next on the agenda was the main bathroom. The existing light fitting was outdated and needed swapping out for something far more suitable for a damp environment. We wired in a new warm white, round LED bulkhead light flush to the ceiling. This specific unit is fully IP-rated, meaning it offers proper mechanical protection against moisture and water ingress, which is vital when placing electrical items in bathroom zones. We didn’t just throw the old bathroom light away.

The homeowner wanted better visibility up in the dark loft space, specifically around the heating system. We repurposed the old bathroom fitting, taking it upstairs and mounting it directly onto the masonry wall adjacent to the boiler. This part of the job required some careful wiring and a bit of logical planning. The brief was to alter the electrical setup so that the new loft light would still function even if the main boiler isolator was turned off. Often, heating engineers need to isolate the power to work safely on the boiler, which can plunge the loft into total darkness if the lighting is wired directly into the same isolated feed. To get around this, we took the power supply from the incoming side of the boiler circuit and introduced an additional isolator specifically for the lighting. We fused the supply down to safely run the light and positioned a brand new switch conveniently on the timber stud work below the fitting. Because loft spaces are prone to snags from people moving boxes or dragging stored items around, leaving bare cables exposed is a bad idea. We contained all the new wiring within 25mm PVC trunking, cutting it to length and screwing it securely to the woodwork to give the cables solid mechanical protection.

The final tasks took us outside to the rear of the property. The old exterior light was failing and letting water in, so we supplied and installed a fresh lantern-style wall unit. We used a Lutec Cotswold black vintage coach half-lantern that features an integrated PIR sensor built into the base. We drilled the masonry to accept the new fixings, made off the waterproof electrical connections, and set the sensor range. This means the light automatically triggers when someone walks past on the rear pathway, offering practical lighting for the back garden without needing to be manually switched on and off. Right next to this new lantern, the rear outdoor WC needed a minor fix. The internal pull cord light switch had become incredibly stiff and the internal spring mechanism was unreliable. We isolated the lighting circuit, removed the old plastic housing, and wired in a direct replacement pull cord switch. We tested the switching action a few times to confirm it was operating smoothly again.
