The kitchen was the starting point. Outside, the property had two existing single IP-rated sockets – one at the rear of the house, one on the garden fence – and both were upgraded from 1-gang to 2-gang IP65 units. Converting both to double outlets solves that. The loft was next. The existing loft light was removed and replaced with two 4ft LED batten lights, one positioned at each end of the space. Single loft bulbs are fairly common in older properties, but they’re not particularly useful when you’re trying to find something stored at the far end of a long roof space. Running battens at either end gives even, practical coverage throughout. While the work was being carried out in the loft, the existing cables – which hadn’t been clipped – were tidied and neatly clipped as part of the same visit. It doesn’t add much time but it leaves the loft in a much better condition, both practically and in terms of how a future inspection would view the installation.

Getting power out to the garden shed was the most involved part of the day. The feed was taken from the existing rear garden socket, with 2.5mm SWA cable run from the fence to the shed. Steel wire armoured cable is the correct choice for this kind of outdoor run – the steel armour layer provides physical protection against accidental damage from digging or garden tools, which matters for any cable running underground or in an exposed route across a garden. Marker tape was laid over the buried section so anyone carrying out work in that area in future will know there’s a cable below. From the point the supply enters the shed, all internal wiring was surface-mounted and neatly clipped to the timber throughout.

Inside the shed itself, two double socket outlets were surface-mounted, giving four socket positions in total – practical for a working shed, hobby space or garden room where you might want to run tools, a lamp, a charger and something else all at the same time. The lighting was a 4ft LED batten, controlled by a switched fused spur positioned at the entrance to the shed. The fused spur serves as the light switch for the circuit and also provides the required overcurrent protection within the shed’s supply. It’s a tidy, functional arrangement that avoids the cost and complexity of installing a separate consumer unit for a relatively straightforward outbuilding setup.

To close out the job, the porch light fitting was swapped for a client-supplied replacement. A quick change, but one that finishes the front of the house off neatly and rounds off a varied day across the whole property.
