Exterior Light Replacement in St Austell

Wave Electrical Solutions replaced two exterior light fittings at a residential property in St Austell, fitting client-supplied PIR sensor units to the outside of the building. A straightforward swap carried out safely and to a clean finish.

Replacing exterior light fittings might seem like a minor job, but getting it right matters more than most people realise. Outdoor electrical work carries its own set of considerations – from working with existing wiring and junction arrangements to making sure the new fitting is properly weatherproofed and the connections are solid. This was exactly the kind of work we carried out at a residential property in St Austell, where we replaced two exterior light fittings with units supplied by the client.

The customer had already chosen their new lights – PIR motion-sensor bulkhead fittings – and simply needed a competent electrician to handle the installation correctly. That’s a common enough scenario, and it’s one we’re happy to work with. Whether a client brings their own fittings or wants us to source them, the standard of the installation doesn’t change.

Both fittings were located on the exterior of the property, each in a slightly different position and involving their own access and fixing considerations. One was positioned near the front entrance, where the existing wiring arrangement required careful attention to how the new unit would connect and sit against the surface. The other was on a rear-facing wall, again requiring a clean, secure mount against a rendered exterior. In both cases, the new fittings needed to be seated properly, all connections made safely within the fitting or associated enclosures, and the finished result left tidy with no exposed cabling.

PIR sensor lights have become a popular choice for the outside of homes – and it’s easy to see why. They only activate when movement is detected, which keeps energy use down compared to a light left running all evening. They’re also practical from a security standpoint, as an unexpected burst of light drawing attention to movement around a property is often enough of a deterrent on its own. For the client, having them fitted properly by a qualified electrician rather than attempting a DIY installation means the wiring is done correctly, the IP rating of the fitting isn’t compromised by a poor cable entry, and everything is safe to use going forward.

One of the things worth noting about this type of work is that even a simple fitting replacement can go wrong quickly if the person doing it isn’t comfortable with outdoor wiring. The cable runs feeding exterior lights are often routed through walls, above ceilings, or through conduit – and disturbing or incorrectly reconnecting them creates problems that aren’t always obvious straight away. Getting the connections right first time, using appropriate methods for outdoor terminations, and leaving the installation in a condition that can be safely inspected later is what separates a proper job from a bodge.

For this project in St Austell, the work was completed without fuss. The existing feeds were checked, the new fittings were mounted securely to the building, connections were made up correctly, and everything was tested before we left site. Both PIR sensors were confirmed to be working as expected – triggering reliably on movement and sitting within the correct sensitivity range for their positions.

St Austell and the surrounding area is somewhere we cover regularly for both domestic and commercial electrical work, from small jobs like this through to larger installations and full rewires. If you’ve got new fittings you want swapping in, or you’re thinking about upgrading the exterior lighting on your home or business premises, feel free to get in touch.
