The shift towards electric vehicles continues to gather momentum across Cornwall, bringing with it new requirements for home charging solutions. We’ve carried out an installation of an advanced Zappi electric vehicle charging system for a homeowner in Truro, incorporating smart features that make charging both efficient and cost-effective.

This installation required careful consideration of the property’s electrical infrastructure to ensure reliable and safe operation. We began by upgrading the electrical distribution system, installing a modern six-way consumer unit with integrated surge protection. This crucial addition safeguards both the charging equipment and the connected vehicle from potentially damaging power fluctuations that can occur in the grid network.

The Zappi charging system stands out for its intelligent approach to power management. Working alongside the main charging unit, we installed a Harvi wireless monitoring device that continuously tracks the property’s electrical consumption. This smart technology prevents system overload by automatically adjusting the charging rate based on the household’s real-time power usage, ensuring the property’s electrical supply remains stable and efficient.

For the charging point itself, we selected a 7.4kW tethered unit, which comes with a permanently attached charging cable for straightforward, ready-to-use operation. The integrated cable design not only provides added security against theft but also makes the charging process remarkably straightforward for daily use. The installation location was carefully chosen at the front of the property, allowing easy access while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the home.

The entire system is fed through a dedicated 40-amp circuit breaker, providing appropriate protection while delivering optimal charging performance. Utilising steel wire armoured cable, ensures robust protection for the power supply in all weather conditions and provides long-term durability for this outdoor installation.

Throughout the project, we maintained strict adherence to the 18th Edition wiring regulations, conducting comprehensive electrical testing to verify the installation’s safety and efficiency. This thorough approach culminated in the provision of an Electrical Installation Certificate, documenting the system’s compliance with all current regulations and safety standards.

This installation represents another step forward in supporting Cornwall’s transition to sustainable transport solutions. The combination of advanced charging technology and intelligent power management provides our client with a reliable, efficient charging solution that’s ready to serve their electric vehicle needs for years to come.
