A heated towel rail replacement in the ground floor WC at a residential property in Crantock, Cornwall. The existing unit was removed and replaced with an 800mm x 500mm chrome rail fitted with a thermostatic and timer-controlled element.

The practical difference between a basic element and a thermostatic one is fairly straightforward. A standard element is either on or off – it runs at full power until you switch it off, which means the rail is often warmer than it needs to be and drawing more electricity than necessary. A thermostatic element holds the rail at a set temperature and cuts back when that temperature is reached, so it’s not working any harder than it has to. The timer adds another layer of control, allowing the rail to run only during set periods rather than being left on through the day or overnight.
