Cat A and Cat B Ready

There's a big difference between an electrical contractor who occasionally works on commercial sites and one who understands the distinction between a Cat A and Cat B fit-out and what each stage actually requires. Cat A works typically cover the base build electrical installation, things like distribution, general power, emergency lighting, and fire alarm provisions, leaving the space ready for a tenant to take on. Cat B takes it further, bringing in the occupier's specific requirements such as feature and task lighting, power track systems at desk level, AV infrastructure, and data and comms layouts. What's the difference between a Cat A and Cat B fit-out?

Cat A fit-outs brings a commercial space up to a base level of completion, covering the core electrical infrastructure such as distribution, general power circuits, emergency lighting, and fire alarm provisions. The space is functional but essentially blank, ready for a tenant to move in and fit it out to their own requirements. Cat B fit-outs is where the occupier’s vision comes to life, covering specific lighting schemes, desk power and data layouts, AV systems, and all the finishing details that make a workspace ready to use from day one.

Can you work directly with main contractors and project managers?

Yes, and it’s something we do regularly. We’re comfortable operating as a sub-contractor within a wider construction programme, attending site meetings, working to a project timeline, and communicating directly with whoever is managing the overall job. We understand how commercial sites run and what’s expected of a professional electrical package within that environment.

Do you handle data cabling and structured cabling as part of a fit-out?

We can incorporate data and power layouts as part of the overall electrical package, including positioning and provision for data outlets, desk-level power tracks with integrated data points, and cable management systems. For larger structured cabling and network infrastructure requirements, we’re happy to work alongside a specialist data contractor or advise on the best approach for your project.

Can you work from an architect's or designer's drawings?

Absolutely. We’re used to working from full electrical and lighting design drawings, and we liaise directly with architects, interior designers, and M&E consultants where needed. If the design is still being developed, we can also provide early-stage input on feasibility, routing, and load requirements to help the design process along.

How do you handle variations during the project?

If something changes on site, whether that’s a design revision, a scope addition, or an unforeseen issue with the existing building fabric, we raise it straight away rather than quietly absorbing it and adding it to the final account. We agree any variation in writing before carrying out additional work, which keeps the budget and programme on track and avoids any surprises at the end of the job.

The clear contract gave me a lot of peace of mind. The representative also took the time to explain each option and their associated pros and cons.With a date confirmed, the engineer arrived on time and made quick work of the upgrades. He was polite, efficient, and indulged my many queries about home electrics! BEFORE

Tender: We review your drawings and specification carefully, ask the right questions, and provide a clear, itemised quote that reflects the actual scope of work involved.

Programme: We agree our start date, key milestones, and site attendance requirements with your project manager so our package fits cleanly into the wider build schedule.

Prep: We order materials, confirm access arrangements, and carry out any pre-installation planning needed so we’re ready to hit the ground running from day one.

DURING

First Fix: We run all containment, cabling, and back-box installations in coordination with other trades, working to the agreed drawings and flagging any design queries early.

Second Fix: We complete all wiring connections, fit accessories and luminaires, and install distribution boards and power track systems in line with the finished specification.

Testing: We carry out full testing and inspection of the completed installation, producing the necessary certification before the project moves to practical completion.

AFTER

Sign-Off: We provide all test certificates, as-fitted drawings where required, and any operation and maintenance documentation needed for the project handover pack.

Walkthrough: We go through the completed installation with you or your client, covering zoning, controls, and anything the end user needs to know about how the system operates.
