Commercial Emergency Lighting and LED Conversion Project in Truro

Our team recently completed a commercial lighting upgrade at a business premises in Truro, focusing on replacing outdated emergency lighting systems and converting conventional fluorescent tubes to energy-efficient LED alternatives.

This commercial space in Truro required significant lighting improvements to meet current safety standards and energy efficiency goals. Upon initial assessment, we identified several issues that needed addressing, including failing emergency lighting units, an unreliable outdoor emergency bulkhead that had experienced water ingress problems, and numerous fluorescent tubes that were either failing or consuming excessive energy.

Working across both the ground floor and first-floor office spaces, we began by carefully removing the existing twin spot emergency lighting units. These older units contained lead-acid batteries which required proper disposal according to current regulations. The replacement process involved installing three new twin spot emergency lighting fixtures that provide reliable illumination during power outages, giving staff adequate visibility to navigate safely to exits in an emergency situation.

A particular challenge in this project was addressing the outdoor emergency bulkhead light that had previously leaked on two separate occasions. Water ingress in external lighting is a common but serious issue that can lead to electrical faults and potential safety hazards. We completely removed the problematic unit and installed a new IP-rated emergency bulkhead with additional weatherproofing measures. Our installation approach included careful sealing of all entry points and proper positioning to minimise exposure to direct rainfall, helping prevent future water infiltration issues.

Throughout the office spaces, we identified and replaced numerous failing fluorescent tubes with their LED equivalents. LED technology offers significant advantages for commercial environments, including reduced energy consumption, longer operational lifespans, and improved light quality. The new LED tubes provide consistent illumination without the flickering often associated with ageing fluorescent lights, creating a more comfortable working environment for staff while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.

The high-level installation work required the use of extension ladders to safely access the ceiling-mounted emergency lighting units. Our team followed strict safety protocols when working at height, ensuring all equipment was properly secured and stable throughout the installation process.

This comprehensive lighting upgrade delivers multiple benefits to the client’s premises. The new emergency lighting system provides reliable safety coverage in the event of power failures, meeting commercial building regulations. The conversion to LED technology throughout the office spaces will result in noticeable energy savings, contributing to lower operational costs and supporting the business’s sustainability goals. Additionally, the improved light quality creates a better working environment for staff, potentially contributing to improved productivity and wellbeing.
