Zappi EV Charger Installation in Bodmin Home

Installation of a 7.4kW MyEnergi Zappi tethered EV charger with dedicated consumer unit and load monitoring for safe, efficient vehicle charging at a Bodmin property.

Our team recently completed an electric vehicle charging installation at a residential property in Bodmin, providing the homeowner with a reliable and efficient solution for their EV charging needs.

The project involved installing a 7.4kW tethered MyEnergi Zappi EV charger on the exterior wall at the front of the property, specifically positioned on the front face of the side pillar of the garage. This thoughtful placement allows convenient access for charging whilst maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the property.

For those unfamiliar with tethered chargers, these units come with a permanently attached charging cable, eliminating the need for vehicle owners to supply their own cable each time they charge. This fixed solution offers both convenience and security, as the cable cannot be removed or stolen – a practical consideration for many EV owners.

The MyEnergi Zappi charger represents an intelligent choice for homeowners transitioning to electric vehicles. With its sleek white and grey design, the unit blends seamlessly with the property’s exterior while providing robust charging capabilities. The 7.4kW power rating delivers efficient charging speeds, significantly faster than standard domestic sockets.

A key aspect of this installation involved establishing a dedicated electrical supply for the EV charger. We installed a specialised consumer unit with an integrated Surge Protection Device (SPD) to safeguard both the charging equipment and the vehicle’s sensitive electronics from potential voltage fluctuations and power surges from the grid. The consumer unit houses a 40A circuit breaker, providing appropriate protection and ensuring the safe distribution of power to the charging point.

To maintain the integrity of the property’s electrical system, we implemented a load monitoring device as part of the installation. This intelligent component continuously monitors the overall electrical demand within the property and dynamically adjusts the charger’s power consumption accordingly. This prevents system overloads and eliminates the risk of tripping the main supply – particularly valuable during times when multiple appliances might be operating simultaneously.

The electrical connection required running 10 metres of SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable, which provides robust protection and durability for external installations. This cable type is specifically designed to withstand environmental factors and physical damage, making it ideal for outdoor electrical applications like EV charger installations.

The installation process included splitting the incoming meter tails using 100A connectors to supply the new EV consumer unit while maintaining the existing electrical setup. This approach allows for integration with the current electrical system without requiring a complete rewiring of the property.

Following installation, we conducted comprehensive electrical testing of all circuits within the property to verify safety and compliance with regulatory standards. This testing is essential for producing the required Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and facilitating the submission of Building Control Notification of Electrical Works – documentation that confirms the installation meets all current regulations and safety standards.

All work was carried out in strict accordance with the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, ensuring that the installation not only functions efficiently but also satisfies all necessary safety requirements.

The Bodmin area continues to see growing interest in electric vehicle infrastructure, with more homeowners making the transition to EVs. Having a dedicated home charging solution provides significant advantages for EV owners, including lower charging costs compared to public charging stations and the convenience of starting each day with a fully charged vehicle.

As certified EV charger installers in Bodmin and throughout Cornwall, we understand the importance of providing solutions that meet current needs while accommodating future developments in EV technology. This installation exemplifies our commitment to delivering electrical solutions that combine practical functionality with forward-thinking design.
